Palmistry Glossary — the Lines, Mounts & Signs of Love
Clear definitions of the terms used in a couple compatibility palm reading, from the classical canon of Cheiro, William Benham, Ellen Goldberg and the Vedic Hast Rekha Shastra.
Heart line
The horizontal crease highest on the palm, below the fingers — how a person loves. Rising under the index finger (Jupiter): idealistic, devoted love. Under the middle finger (Saturn): passion that guards its own depths. A deep curve loves out loud; a straighter line loves steadily and quietly. Comparing two heart lines is the heart of every couple reading.
Head line
The middle crease — how a person thinks and decides. Straight: pragmatic reason. Sloping toward the mount of Luna: a mind of images and intuition. Two different head lines in a couple are read as vision meeting verdict.
Life line
The arc around the base of the thumb — vitality and rhythm, not length of life. A wide arc lives warmly and steadily; a bold sweep must be in motion. In a couple it asks: can two paces make one dance?
Fate line
The vertical crease up the centre of the palm — direction and destiny. From the life line: the self-made. From the mount of Luna: a destiny shaped through others. Striking couple readings occur when one fate line answers the other.
Marriage lines (lines of union)
Short horizontal lines on the palm’s edge between heart line and little finger — traditionally, significant unions and deep attachments.
Mount of Venus
The pad at the thumb’s base — warmth, sensuality, affection. Full in both partners: a shared instinct for warmth and touch.
Mount of Jupiter
Beneath the index finger — ambition, confidence, idealism.
Mount of Luna
The outer edge of the palm — imagination, intuition, the inner sea.
Hand shape & the four elements
Earth (square palm, short fingers — practical), Air (square + long fingers — communicative), Water (long + long — feeling), Fire (long palm, short fingers — energetic). Water meeting Fire is the classic tempering union: steam and force.
Left hand vs right hand
The left carries the temperament you were born with; the right, the life you have made. A serious couple reading reads all four palms.
